A Labrador might look like the easiest dog to color - pick one crayon and go. But that's actually what makes it tricky. When a dog is all one color with short smooth fur, you need to work a bit harder to stop it looking flat and boring.
The good news is you get to pick from three very different looks. Yellow Labs range from almost white to a deep butterscotch. Chocolate Labs are a rich, warm brown. And black Labs are - well, black, but coloring a black dog well is harder than you'd think.
Labradors are one of the most popular dog breeds in the world. In America, they've been the number one favorite for years and years.
For a yellow or chocolate Lab, the secret is shading. Press lighter on the top of the head, the chest, and the tops of the legs where light would hit. Press harder under the belly, behind the ears, and along the underside of the tail where shadows would be. That light-and-dark difference is what makes a one-color dog look real instead of like a blob.
Black Labs are a special challenge. If you just fill the whole thing in with black, you lose all the detail. Instead, try using dark gray for most of the body and save solid black for the deepest shadow areas - under the chin, between the legs, and underneath the belly. It gives the dog shape without turning it into a solid dark lump.
Did you know? Labradors have a thick, strong tail that is wide at the base and gets thinner at the tip. People sometimes call it an "otter tail" because it looks like the tail of an otter.
Don't forget the nose and eyes. Labs have a big, wide nose - black on yellow and black Labs, brown on chocolate Labs. For the eyes, warm brown works for all three types. Leave that little white dot to make them shine.
