You might already know that Poodles have curly fur - but what makes a Standard Poodle really fun to color is the haircut. Many of our Poodle coloring pages show them in a fancy style where some parts of the body are left big and fluffy while other parts are trimmed very short. That means you'll use two completely different coloring styles on the same dog.
For the fluffy parts - usually the chest, the top of the head, the hips, and the ankles - pack your strokes in tight and press firmly. Small circles or loops work well here to show off all those curls. For the trimmed parts - the legs, the waist, and the back - keep things light and smooth, almost like you're coloring a short-haired dog. That contrast between puffy and sleek is what makes the picture look right.
Standard Poodles are much bigger than most people think. They can stand over two feet tall at the shoulder - about the same height as a Golden Retriever.
Poodles come in solid colors: black, white, brown, apricot, silver, cream, and red. Whatever color you pick, use a slightly darker version of it in the fluffy sections and a slightly lighter version on the trimmed sections. This helps show where the thick curly fur ends and the short fur begins, even though it's all the same color.
Those fancy Poodle haircuts aren't just for looks. They were originally designed to keep the dog's joints and chest warm while making it easier to move through water.
Don't forget the pom-poms. Many Poodle pictures show little round puffs on the ankles, the tip of the tail, and sometimes the hips. These should be the most tightly packed, darkest areas on the whole dog - they're thick balls of curly fur, so really go for it with your pencil.
The topknot is the big puff of curls on top of the head. Round it off nicely and make it a little darker around the edges so it looks like it has real shape instead of just sitting flat.
