"What are you going to be this year?" It's the biggest question of the season, and our Trick-or-Treat and Costumes coloring pages are full of answers. There are 110 free printable designs in this collection, and every one downloads as a PDF in US Letter or A4.

Toddlers can start with big wrapped candies, lollipops and simple dress-up masks, then move on to little ones dressed as bumblebees, lions, firefighters and even a hot dog. Kids ages 4 to 7 get costume parades, party games and families in matching outfits, while older kids can color trunk-or-treat events, homemade cardboard costumes and detailed scenes from Halloween history.

They're handy for parents helping a child choose a costume, and for preschool teachers who need calm October activities before the class costume parade. If your child enjoys these, check out our Pumpkins and Jack-o'-Lanterns coloring pages and Cute Witches and Black Cats coloring pages too.

5 imaginative play ideas using Trick-or-Treat and Costumes coloring pages

These ideas use paper, glue and a few household basics, and most take less than half an hour. They work for one child at home or a whole preschool class.

Trick-or-Treat and Costumes pages craft
  1. Costume planning board

Can't decide what to be this year? Print a handful of the costume pages, like the girl dressed as an astronaut, the boy dressed as a friendly dragon and the child dressed as a taco, and let your child color their favorites.

Pin them on a board and narrow it down together until one costume wins.

    You'll need:
    • 5 to 8 printed costume pages
    • Crayons or markers
    • A corkboard or large piece of card
    • Pins or tape
    • Small sticky dots for voting
    How to do it:
    • Let your child pick and color the costumes they like best.
    • Pin all of them up on the board.
    • Give everyone in the family three sticky dots to vote with.
    • Count the dots and crown this year's costume.

The finished drawing makes a nice keepsake to compare with the real thing.

  2. Doorstep practice puppets

Some little ones get shy at the door, just like the toddler peeking out from behind her dad's legs. Turning the doorstep pages into stick puppets lets them practice saying "trick or treat" and "thank you" before the big night.

The neighbor holding out a bowl of candy makes a perfect puppet for a grown-up to play.

    You'll need:
    • Printed doorstep and trick-or-treater pages
    • Scissors
    • Craft sticks
    • Glue or tape
    • A cardboard box to use as the front door
    How to do it:
    • Color the characters and cut them out.
    • Tape each one to a craft stick.
    • Cut a door shape in the side of the box so it opens and closes.
    • Take turns knocking, saying "trick or treat" and saying thank you.

Swap roles so your child gets to hand out the candy too.

  3. Guess-the-costume flap game

The costume pages make a great guessing game for preschoolers. Cover each colored picture with a paper flap that has a small window cut in it, then let kids guess the costume from one small clue.

A peek at a striped sleeve could be the bumblebee or the giant crayon, which keeps everyone guessing.

    You'll need:
    • Colored costume pages
    • Plain paper the same size
    • Scissors
    • Tape
    How to do it:
    • Cut a small window, about the size of a coin, in each sheet of plain paper.
    • Tape the plain sheet over a colored page along the top edge.
    • Ask kids to guess the costume through the window.
    • Lift the flap to reveal the answer.

Move the window to a trickier spot for older kids.

  4. Candy counting cards

The wrapped candy, swirly lollipop, candy corn and caramel apple pages are simple enough to shrink down into small counting cards. Kids can sort them, count them and share them out, just like real treats after trick-or-treating.

It's an easy way to practice early math without a single real candy.

    You'll need:
    • Candy pages printed at about 25 percent size
    • Card stock
    • Glue stick and scissors
    • A paper bag or small bowl
    How to do it:
    • Print several copies of each candy, color them and glue them onto card stock.
    • Cut out each one to make a small card.
    • Put the cards in the bag and tip them out onto the table.
    • Sort them by type, count each pile and share them out between players.

Ask "how many more lollipops than candy corns?" for an extra challenge.

  5. Costume parade wall display

Line up colored pages from the whole collection into a long parade across a wall or hallway. The preschool parade and the town square parade pages make great starting points, with single costume pages marching along behind.

In a classroom, every child can add the costume they'd most like to wear.

    You'll need:
    • Colored costume pages
    • Scissors
    • A long strip of paper or a roll of lining paper
    • Glue or sticky tack
    How to do it:
    • Cut out each costumed character around the outline.
    • Draw a simple road or path along the paper strip.
    • Glue the characters in a line so they look like they're marching.
    • Hang the strip along a wall at child height.

Add paper bats and leaves above the parade for a finishing touch.

In Scotland, children in disguise were called guisers, and they didn't get treats for free. At each door they had to tell a joke, sing a song or recite a poem first.
