5 creative projects kids can make with USA themed coloring pages

These activities use pages from the collection along with basic supplies you probably already have at home. They work well for rainy afternoons, classroom geography units, or family craft time - no specialty materials needed.

USA coloring pages crafts
  1. Build a USA Road Trip Map

This is a great way to turn coloring into a geography lesson. Kids color their favorite landmark pages, cut them out, and place them on a large map of the United States in the right locations.

The Statue of Liberty goes near New York, the Gateway Arch near St. Louis, and the saguaro cactus scene down in Arizona. It's a fun way to learn where things actually are.

    You'll need:
    • 5-10 printed coloring pages (landmarks from different states)
    • A large printed or hand-drawn outline map of the USA
    • Scissors
    • Glue stick
    • Crayons or colored pencils
    • String or yarn (optional, for drawing route lines)
    How to do it:
    • Color and cut out each landmark, trimming closely around the outline.
    • Lay the map on a large sheet of poster board or cardboard for support.
    • Help your child figure out which state each landmark belongs to and glue it in place.
    • If you want, connect the landmarks with string to create a "road trip route" across the country.

Hang the finished map on the wall - it makes a fantastic bedroom or classroom display.

  2. Landmark Postcards

Turn the simpler landmark pages into postcards kids can actually send to grandparents or friends. The bold single-subject designs like the Capitol Building, the lighthouse, and the Golden Gate Bridge work especially well for this.

    You'll need:
    • Printed coloring pages on cardstock (or glued onto cardstock after printing)
    • Scissors
    • Crayons or colored pencils
    • Ruler and pencil
    How to do it:
    • Print the page onto cardstock, or glue a regular printout onto a piece of cardstock and let it dry.
    • Color the landmark side.
    • Trim to postcard size (about 4x6 inches works well).
    • On the back, draw a vertical line down the middle - address on the right, message on the left.

These are a hit with grandparents, and kids love knowing their artwork is traveling through the real mail.

  3. 3D Landmark Diorama

Use the bolder pages - like the barn with the silo, the front porch scene, or the stilted beach house - to build a mini standing scene inside a shoebox. This is a great project for kids who like building things, not just coloring.

    You'll need:
    • 1-2 printed coloring pages
    • A shoebox
    • Scissors
    • Glue or tape
    • Crayons or colored pencils
    • Cotton balls, sand, or craft paper scraps for scenery (optional)
    How to do it:
    • Color the page and carefully cut out the main landmark shape.
    • Fold a small tab at the bottom of the cutout so it can stand upright when glued inside the box.
    • Decorate the inside of the shoebox as a background - blue paper for sky, green for grass, tan for desert.
    • Glue the landmark in place and add extra details like cotton ball clouds or sand on the floor for a desert scene.

Line up a few finished dioramas on a shelf for a mini museum of American landmarks.

  4. American Food Menu

The food pages in this collection - the BBQ spread, the cheeseburger, the pancake stack, the pizza slice, the ice cream sundae - are tailor-made for this activity. Kids color and cut them out, then arrange them into a pretend restaurant menu.

    You'll need:
    • 5-6 printed food coloring pages from the collection
    • A large sheet of construction paper or cardstock (folded in half)
    • Scissors
    • Glue stick
    • Crayons or markers
    How to do it:
    • Color each food page and cut out the main food item.
    • Fold the large sheet in half to make a menu booklet.
    • Glue the food cutouts inside, arranging them into sections - mains, sides, desserts.
    • Kids can add their own prices and dish names next to each item.

This pairs perfectly with pretend play - set up a "restaurant" at home and let kids take orders using their menu.

  5. State Fair Bunting Banner

The state fair page and the fireworks page are perfect starting points for a patriotic party banner. Color them, cut them into pennant shapes, and string them together for a bedroom or classroom decoration.

    You'll need:
    • 4-6 printed coloring pages (the fireworks, state fair, bald eagle, and landmark pages work best)
    • Scissors
    • Hole punch
    • String, ribbon, or yarn
    • Crayons or markers
    How to do it:
    • Color each page with bright, bold colors.
    • Cut each page into a large triangle or pennant shape, keeping the main artwork centered.
    • Punch two holes along the wide top edge of each pennant.
    • Thread the string through all the pennants, spacing them a few inches apart.

Hang it across a window, doorway, or classroom wall for instant Americana decorating.

The Statue of Liberty's full name is "Liberty Enlightening the World." She was a gift from France in 1886 and arrived in 350 individual pieces packed into 214 crates. Workers spent four months assembling her on what was then called Bedloe's Island.
