110 Cow Coloring Pages - Free PDF Printables

By: Crafty Josh | Last Update:

Why do cows chew all day, even when they aren't eating? They're chewing their cud, bringing grass back up from their stomach to chew it a second time, and you'll spot it on a few pages in this collection. Our 110 cow coloring pages are free printable designs, ready to download as a PDF in US Letter or A4.

The simplest pages suit toddlers and preschoolers, with big friendly cows, sleepy calves and extra-thick outlines that are easy for small hands. Older kids get fuller farm scenes with more to color, from a busy dairy barn to cowboys driving longhorns across the prairie, and teachers will find plenty for a farm or food-from-the-farm unit.

You'll meet lots of different breeds too, including shaggy Highland cows, patchy dairy cows, gentle Jerseys and the striped Belted Galloway. If your child enjoys these, take a look at our Horse coloring pages and Wild West coloring pages too.

5 fun things to do with Cow coloring pages

Every idea here uses everyday bits and pieces, like an empty milk carton or a paper plate. They're quick to set up at home and easy to scale up for a whole class.

  1. Build a milk carton dairy barn

An empty milk carton already has the perfect barn shape. Color the cows lining up for milking and the dairy cow with big patches, then stand them around your carton barn.

Kids love that the barn is made from something the cows helped fill.

    You'll need:
    • An empty, rinsed milk carton
    • Colored paper or cardstock
    • Glue and scissors
    • Colored cow pages
    How to do it:
    • Cover the carton with paper and draw on a big barn door and windows.
    • Color and cut out several cows.
    • Glue a folded strip of cardstock to the back of each cow so it stands up.
    • Line the cows up at the barn door, ready for milking.

Add a few cotton ball clouds on sticks for a sunny farm scene.

  2. Make a mountain cowbell garland

In the mountains, cows wear big bells so farmers can hear where they are. Color the cow with the big bell around its neck and the cows walking down from the mountains, then turn them into a garland that really jingles.

It's a fun one to hang across a doorway.

    You'll need:
    • Colored cow pages
    • String or ribbon
    • Small craft jingle bells
    • A hole punch and tape
    How to do it:
    • Color and cut out five or six cows.
    • Punch a hole at the top of each one.
    • Thread them onto the string, tying a jingle bell between each cow.
    • Hang the garland where it'll ring when the door opens.

Every time it jingles, someone can shout "moo."

  3. Design your own cow patches

No two dairy cows have exactly the same pattern of patches, just like no two people have the same fingerprints. Print the plain cow standing in the grass a few times and let kids invent their own patch pattern on each one.

Then mix them up and see who can spot their own cow.

    You'll need:
    • Several copies of a simple cow page
    • A black or brown marker
    • Crayons for the rest of the scene
    How to do it:
    • Give everyone a cow page and a marker.
    • Draw and fill in your own patch shapes on the cow's coat.
    • Color the grass and sky to finish the page.
    • Shuffle all the cows and take turns finding your own.

It also makes a great classroom wall display of one unique herd.

  4. Play a "from the cow" sorting game

Use the milkmaid carrying her pails and the old farmyard with the butter churn to talk about where milk comes from. Then make picture cards of foods and sort out which ones are made from milk.

It's a simple way to connect farm animals with what's in the fridge.

    You'll need:
    • Colored cow pages
    • Paper or cardstock for food cards
    • Crayons and scissors
    How to do it:
    • Draw simple food cards, like cheese, butter, yogurt, ice cream, apples and bread.
    • Lay a colored cow page on one side of the table.
    • Take turns deciding whether each food comes from milk.
    • Place the milk foods next to the cow and the others in a separate pile.

Finish with a glass of milk or a cheese snack as a reward.

  5. Make a paper plate cow mask

The big cow head page with the wide nose and ears sticking out to the sides makes a great mask. Glue it to a paper plate and kids can moo their way around the house.

Pair it with the horse head from our horse pages for a farmyard play.

    You'll need:
    • The cow head page
    • A paper plate
    • Glue and scissors
    • A craft stick or elastic
    How to do it:
    • Color the cow head and glue it onto the paper plate.
    • Trim around the ears and horns.
    • Ask a grown-up to cut out two eye holes.
    • Tape a craft stick to the bottom or attach elastic to the sides.

Take a photo of everyone in their masks for the fridge.

The long fringe of hair over a Highland cow's eyes has its own name, a dossan. It helps keep rain, snow and flies out of the cow's eyes.
