How to color our trains printables

There isn't a perfect way to color these trains - if you enjoy the activity then you are doing it right. Still, a few train-specific ideas can make the engines, wagons, and tracks stand out even more.

Start with the train body first so the whole engine feels connected. Steel gray, cherry red, navy blue, and bright yellow all work really well on locomotives, and alternating container colors can make long freight trains easier to follow.
Use warm brown or cool gray on the railroad ties, then add a darker silver on the rails so the track doesn't disappear. A pale blue window band and a tiny white highlight can make modern train pages look glossy and fast.
If the page includes smoke, tunnels, or freight yards, try soft gray, dusty black, rusty brown, and olive green for a more train-like feel. Then break the rules a little if you want - a purple engine or rainbow boxcars can look fantastic too.
Keep backgrounds a little lighter than the train so the engine stays the star of the page. Sage green hills, sandy tan bridges, and pale blue skies work nicely, and broad markers are especially handy on big wagon sides.

You can browse even more themes in our main coloring pages collection. We're adding new pages regularly, so it's worth checking back when you need a fresh stack to print.
